Mathematics Tutoring Program

My Favorite Charity Events (MFCE) provides free mathematics tutoring to elementary school students to who are struggling to master the fundamentals of mathematics because of the lost classroom time due to the pandemic. Our staff includes current teachers as tutors and mentors and collegiate students providing them the opportunity to expand their classroom instruction with real one-on-one training of students who need that extra help to become superstar students.

On September 8, 2023, Virginia Governor Youngkin released the 2022-23 Standards of Learning scores. These scores showed in Math, two thirds of all 3rd through 8th graders (327,598 students) are at risk or have failed the Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessment. Governor Youngkin outlined Virginia’s “ALL In” plan that defined high-intensity academic tutoring. The “ALL In” plan, as well as our free tutoring program focuses on supporting those students who failed their SOLs or who demonstrated risk of failing.

My Favorite Charity Events (MFCE’s) goal is to provide continuity in learning processes and provide a free tutoring program that extends into the school year affording children the extra academic support needed to catch up on lost classroom learning from the Pandemic and to support children who need additional assistance in mathematics.

MFCE is working to transform the lives of elementary school children academically through our free mathematics tutoring program. We currently run our mathematics tutoring program in coordination with Cooke Elementary School. The mathematics specialist and School Counselor identify children who have not passed their Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessment in math or are struggling with math fundamentals. We are unique in that we coordinate tutoring sessions with the student’s teacher and Math Specialist to ensure we are addressing weaknesses in critical grade-level mathematical fundamentals. The MFCE’s tutoring program provides three 1-hour tutoring sessions a week.

We currently have relationships with the Virginia Chamber Foundation, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and the Virginia Business Higher Education Council’s Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership Program (V-TOP), Old Dominion University’s Monarch Internship and CoOp Office, the Elementary Education & Early Childhood Education Undergraduate Program, Career Development, and The Lighthouse, Virginia Wesleyan University. We formed these relationships because they advance our charity’s mission of providing free mathematics tutoring and provides the benefit of creating a pipeline of potential elementary school teachers to the Virginia Beach City Public School System.

For MFCE, our mission is to help create a positive difference for elementary school children, their family, and/or the school organization.

So here is our “win list” starting with the most important piece – the elementary school children.

a. Elementary School student – receives free mathematics tutoring addressing weaknesses in critical grade-level mathematical fundamentals and to improve Standards of Learning Assessment scores.

b. Elementary School student’s parents: their child receives free tutoring and receives progress updates. We encourage parental participation in reinforcing our lessons with at home reviews.

c. Elementary School: Receives focused free tutoring support for those children identified as struggling in math. Coordinating with the student’s teacher and math specialist ensures the tutoring addresses weaknesses in critical grade-level mathematical fundamentals.

d. Elementary School Math Specialist and Teacher – provides additional support with students struggling with math fundamentals that aligns with the daily class work and builds on that instruction.

e. Virginia Beach City Public School System (VBCPS): MFCE tutoring program creates a collegiate tutor pipeline of potential teachers into the VBCPS system We are a local charity and depend on local donations so that we can continue to work within
the school system to provide these services and 100% of your donation goes to the children.
